Xexy Spice Alert: Just a tiny bitShe hated him.
Now that's a poor thing to feel about one's sibling, but Jacosta hated him, really truly hated him. It was a well honed silent antipathy. He was ignorant of her malice, though she supposed if he'd paid any attention to her at all he might have caught it. But he was too busy gloating in his own intelligence, in the wonder of his manhood, and his strange obsession with their Amazon neighbors, that he never noticed. Oh he thought he was so smart, but he came home unsuccessful from yet another one of his ventures.
She wished he hadn't. Jacosta's home had been so peaceful while he was away. She'd been able to do what she wanted, to pursue her own interests and to gain a little gold of her own. It was carefully hidden away from his greedy hands and it was guilt free. Well, almost guilt free. Maybe it was better to say it wasn't his at all, but was earned through her own efforts. She'd taken some goods for barter to another town where no one knew her or was likely to and she'd spent a bit of time in the taverns, earning her long term escape from this despicable man.
At least he'd not had the notion to marry her off yet. That was a blessing. Not that she was anything worth marrying, being too leggy, long in the face and the nose, having hips that were almost mannish and a bosom to match. Her saving feature had been her hair, but several months ago in fit of anger, he'd shaved it all off as he shouted something about her pride. Now that was a laugh. She had no pride left. The only good thing about that event was that it was less public than the last tantrum he'd thrown and her fawn colored hair had grown out enough to look somewhat pleasing, though the curl was all gone.
Still it kept the men's hands off of her while she was waitressing, so she couldn't complain too much. Most men simply did not appeal to her. She attributed that to her loathsome brother, rightly so. So, her virgin self was still her virgin self. Though she wished sometimes, ached sometimes for something that would fill her silent need. Thank the Gods he was scared enough of their mother's ghost that he never touched her. She grinned in memory.
Their mother had an evil streak a mile wide, but she looked out for them, for her. That had been one mean warning mother'd given Aulix after she'd caught him staring at her daughter. Jacosta imagined it shriveled her brother's testicles right up.
She didn't know how his cronies stood him, but they seemed to worship the ground he walked on. Most likely because he surrounded himself with stupidity, so he could look smart. Maybe she wasn't as intelligent, but she wasn't entirely deficient, so Jacosta knew that eventually this attitude of his would be his downfall. But she didn't want to have to wait for eventually. The next time he went on one of his trips, she was leaving.
She listened as he plotted yet another one of his lame plans for domination of their neighbors and shook her head. You'd think he would have learned from the last time. At least the Amazons had been kind enough to help ready the fields this year, even after his moronic plan had nearly set them to war and cost them the olive harvest. It was a good thing the village ran by council and that Aenid, the elder woman had been there to talk some sense into the men and to negotiate a settlement with the Amazons. They'd never been able to make it over the winter without their help. She didn't know what he was thinking or why he constantly aimed to stir up trouble.
This time, though, it sounded like he had a real bee up his shorts. She listened for a little while, serving drinks or whatever to his cronies, and gleaned some information that had her raising her eyebrows and blushing. Four women. Now that must have been a sight, and that must be some Queen. No wonder he was all in stew. He must be feeling inadequate. She snorted, he probably was inadequate. Oh, now that was mean. She changed her thoughts. It was one thing to hate the man, it was another to sink to his level. Still, this sounded like something Aenid would need to know, so she could head Aulix off at the pass. The last thing this little village needed was more trouble.
Ephiny slid out of bed, grousing to her consort about having to be up so early in the morning. Despite some bards' tales, the life of the Queen's Regent was not one of laziness. One did not get to sleep in, at least not very often. The sheet dragged behind her, as she used it to cover her body, leaving Solari naked to the world. Solari shook her head in good humor and rolled to the side so she could watch her lover walk away. The sheet may have been covering the front, but it did nothing to hide that fine backside. It was too tempting for words. Solari practically hopped of the bed and was pursuing Ephiny before the regent knew she was being hunted. It led to some pleasant morning silliness, which wiped Ephiny's grouchiness away.
Sometime later, while Ephiny was in the council chamber conducting Amazon business, Solari was intercepted by a young runner from one of the outer Amazon villages. The woman, who was sweating and breathing heavy from her run, handed Solari the scroll case and managed to gasp out, "For the Queen's eyes." Solari thanked and excused the runner, then made her way to the chamber.
The blonde read, reread, and then read the scroll one more time. She deliberately kept her expression neutral, assuming the Amazons' stoic mask. Then she excused the council for the day, pulled out an unused scroll and began writing. The quill scritched the simple thank you note quickly along the page. When she finished, she rolled and sealed the scroll and set it aside. Then, she pulled another scroll out and sent some directives to her envoys in the east, moving them to a different Amazon village which was a little more north. She'd been planning on doing that anyway. The next scroll she paused at, looking up at Solari with concerned eyes. Solari touched her face reassuringly and Ephiny began to sketch out a brief note requesting the presence of the Queen. Ephiny was not looking forward to having to discuss this face to face, but there was no other acceptable way to explain this. Someone had been doing some research.
