"Hello? Hello?" The sprite said into Iovene's ear. Iovene blinked. She felt a light whisper of air, but couldn't quite make it out. So she listened with that part of her that watched thoughts form. It was like lighting a torch in the darkness.
"HELLO?????" The sprite had been shouting.
Iovene's mouth gaped open and she blinked. Then she spoke timidly, testing, "Hello?" The diners were suddenly paying attention to her. Velona swallowed what she was chewing.
It was a flood, it was a storm. Iovene was drowning in words, images *and* emotions. thoughtforms swirled around her and in her as the sprite tried to tell the dowser everything she'd been sent to tell. It was a river of sweetness that was positively overwhelming. The curly haired woman's moderate frame shook with emotion. "Oh gods oh gods oh gods oh gods. . ."
Arete stood up and walked around the table. She knelt besides the dowser, "Iovene? Are you okay?" The blonde was pulled into an incredibly forceful hug. She felt the nod. and heard the whisper of gratitude. She thought Iovene was thanking her, but couldn't think of what for.
Then she saw it, kind of. It was more a shape, feminine in form, barely visible as a shimmer and very small. She felt like it was looking right at her. "Hello?" The creature kissed her, full on the lips. She recognized the sensation. "It was you!" Arete blurted.
Iovene pulled herself upright. She looked teary, but in a happy way. Xena stood up. Now she was beyond curious. "It was who?" she asked. She stalked towards her lover and the dowser. Her expression was grim.
Arete didn't wish to scare the sprite off, but knew, if any one could see the creature, it would be Xena. She nodded in the sprite's direction. "Look. Air. It's been talking to Iovene."
"She," the dowser corrected. "She's been talking to me." She wiped her eyes with a finger, looked at Jacosta, then Eudora and smiled. "I'll tell you. Give me a bit."
Velona had an abrupt feeling of being left out and being teased. Her expression darkened. She saw nothing. Nothing at all.
"Air?" Xena repeated. She narrowed her gaze and opened her senses. Arete pointed and felt the lightest of pressure as the sprite settled upon her finger. That's what connected it for Xena. She didn't even have to look twice. There it was. . .she. .there she was. Xena knelt and looked at the small creature and felt a stirring within her that wavered. She lifted her head in greeting, choosing not to speak.
They looked at each other, the warrior and the sprite. Blue eyes gazed into eyes that had no substance but sparkled with life. The air reached out and touched with a small hand. Xena sat back abruptly wriggling her nose. She grinned, enchanted.
It was a moment of great clarity for Xena. Oh, she'd heard them talk about the elementals, but being one who liked to "see" for herself, she'd held her tongue and waited. Besides, there was no reason to doubt Gabrielle. But it was wonderful to observe the proof herself. It filled her practical heart and was a delight, especially to see so small a form. The ring upon her finger no longer seemed so heavy or false. If this was all there was to it, then maybe all those worries she'd been having had been for nothing. "Air," she said, this time with a grounded sense. It was real, all of it.
