The Long Way Home

by Scout
http://xenite.simplenet.com/fanfic/longwayhome.html

This is an absolutely beautiful story that is ultimately about how a loving relationship can not only touch two souls, but touch all the others around as well.

Scout marvelously blends the actions of Xena/Gabrielle and Mel/Janice together to form one complete tale. As Xena and Gabrielle struggle to save a ship and redeem the lives aboard, Mel and Janice struggle to pick up the pieces of the adventure after-the-fact. The two plots are interwoven in such a way as to allow you to feel the awe and excitement of discovery and adventure.

Scout's writing will paint a vivid picture in your mind's eye: from the dust mites dancing past a sunbeam in Mel and Janice's South Carolina home, to the tight and dank feel of "squatter's tunnel" on a remote Island.

But the most important and moving aspect of the story is the quiet love and affection that is displayed in both relationships. The Mel and Janice portions are told in first person, from an outside point of view, which I found amazing effective and moving. The simple presence of love between the two heroines is enough to bring the shy narrator out of her shell, and find herself in the process.

This story has everything. It is a coming of age tale that has adventure and excitement and incredible depth of emotion that will inspire thoughts about love and life. I hope you will enjoy it as much as I did.
