When Larry told me he was writing a Xena story, I asked him who was interested in stories about flowers. He said "Xena, not zinnia. Some people..." Of course, I had to ask him who Xena was. "Xena... well, it's a TV show... aw, just read the story, will you?"
While my family watched TV, I ran around outside. When it was too cold or dark for that, I read. My sister contributed greatly to my education by loaning me her Andre Norton SF books, and I've never looked back. The rest of the world looks pretty pedestrian to one who has been trading among the stars.
So, of course I read Larry's story. Having read other fan fiction, I wasn't expecting much; good writing is a skill that takes much time and effort to develop. "Death Wish" surprised me with its level of craftsmanship and character detail.
It's the first Xena story I've read. My impression is that the names could be changed and it would still be a good story; it transcends the Xena/Gabrielle genre. I think this is a good thing, but what real Xena fans will think is an open question.
I respect good writing. Larry's use of language is good, and economical. The story's structure goes beyond pure linear exposition, with side trips that help complete the picture by showing us what goes on inside the characters. The whole thing shows work and care in its making.
Of particular interest to me is the story's lack of reliance on evil. Evil is there, but drawn in just enough detail to make the threat clear. I've grown tired of books in which the "bad guys" get more attention than everyone else. I'd rather read about relationships than gore. I appreciate Larry's way of writing.
